All set for return of rugby

It’s all systems go as the Econet Rugby League resumes this weekend with mouthwatering clashes taking place at the Roma grounds on Saturday.

The league which is played in three rounds was abruptly interrupted by the Covid-19 outbreak that ravaged the world earlier this year putting an indefinite halt to all world business inclusive of sports, with just one round of the league concluded.

In an interview with Newsday Sport, Federation of Lesotho Rugby (FLR) Communications and Advocacy Manager Morapeli Motaung said although the second round normally starts around August, they still have time to make something of the remaining time.

“Our league is made up of three rounds, where the first round teams play against each other twice and also in the second round but going into this second round under Covid-19, we have decided to scrape off the two legged schedule,” Motaung said.

He said the Coronavirus did have an impact on their sport due to inactivity as a result of suspension of sports but it did not have much of an impact on the league itself as it had already concluded the first round.

“We were on course to prepare our team that takes part in the Eastern Free State League when Covid-19 happened.  It interrupted us from taking part in that league but our league was to take a break from April and due for return in August,” he said.

“So right now we are only to pick up from where we left off which is go straight into the second round although it is over two months late but we have agreed with our sponsor to not have the home and away fixtures,” he said.

Motaung lamented that even though they are happy with the return of the sport it will be a challenge to adhere to the Covid-19 regulations.

“These are not normal times; we are happy to be back onto the field of play but it is going to be challenging to adhere to the regulations because our playgrounds are open so controlling spectators might be tough. We also play our games back to back in one field on one match day, but we have agreed with the teams on that note that the teams that play first must leave immediately after their game, in order to as far as possible adhere to the provisions of social distancing” he said.
