The Ministry of Health’s negligence to sensitize the nation regarding certain illnesses incompatible with the vaccine roll-out has cost four lives.

After four deaths were reported to have been caused by the second phase of the Covid-19 vaccine in Leribe District, the Ministry of Health’s Head Family Health Dr ‘Makhoase Ranyali said that the vaccine does not match with co-commodities, diseases such as high blood pressure, sugar diabetes and HIV.

“If the diseases seem to be high such a person is not supposed to be vaccinated until the disease is under control,” she said.

Mosele Thejane whose sister, ‘Masara Mokoko passed away after being vaccinated with the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine told this publication that her sister was taking high blood medication before she died. She disclosed that the doctor’s remarks stipulated that the cause of death was Covid-19 vaccine.

“She was taking high blood medication during her life,” she said.

She said her sister pointed excessive fatigue last Friday after receiving vaccination the day before.

“We rushed her to Queen ‘Mamohato Memorial Hospital on Saturday but I was not permitted to get inside with her. After she passed on, the doctor came to us and confirmed that the cause of death was the Covid-19 vaccine,” she said.

Thejane indicated that according to the documents from the doctor her sister was vaccinated with AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

“The Ministry of Health came seeking explanation of only what happed and that is all,” she said.

Meanwhile, the District Administrator (DA) of Leribe, Mohlophehi Mohobelo confirmed that four people have died after receiving their dose of Covid-19 vaccine.

“The Ministry of Health can assist with more details because they have been following on that. The only thing I can confirm is that we have recorded four deaths of people who passed on after receiving Covid-19 vaccine,” he said.

“We have received reports of people dying from vaccine from last week and this week received other reports but they are only four reports so far,” he said.

This comes after the Ministry of Health started with the phase 2 vaccine roll out for co-morbidities, clothing and textile factory workers, employees in the mining sector, law enforcement officials, correctional services officials and inmates, teachers and students, the Elderly and front desk home affairs.

The second phase of the vaccine roll out started in Butha-Buthe, Maseru, Leribe and Berea with Johnson and Johnson Vaccine since the beginning of August.

On the other hand, the Maseru district DA Mpane Nthunya said he has never received any reports of people who have died after vaccine.

“I have not received any reports of people who died yet, but I think I should also confirm with people who have been vaccinating people or the District Health Management Team (DHMT),” he said.

On the same note, the DA of Berea district indicated that he has not received any reports of people who died after being vaccinated ever since the vaccine roll out.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ministry of Health and Communications and also Publicity Manager of National Covid-19 Secretariat (NACOSEC) ‘Mateboho Mosebekoane did not refute the deaths adding that the Ministry is probing their cause.

“The Ministry of Health is investigating at present, that is all that I have for now and when investigations are done they will provide the report,” she said.
