One of the country’s most decorated of coaches Mosholu “Shoes” Mokhothu, has made his umpteenth return to Lioli as head coach of the Teyateyaneng-based side for a period of two years.

This comes a few days after Manonyane FC announced that they had parted ways with Mokhothu after negotiations to retain him hit rock bottom.

There had been not-so-good relations between Mokhothu and Manonyane over his overdue salary. The rift between the two parties worsened in recent months leading to him leaving the club.

In a statement released this week, Lioli said the club’s directors had appointed Mokhothu as the new coach for a period of two years.

Lioli had been without a head coach since the demise of mentor Ntsheing Thomas Tshabalala, who had only led the team in three league matches of the current 2020/21 season.

“The Lioli FC Board of Directors has appointed Mr. Mosholu “Shoes” Mokhothu as the coach of the club for a period of two years,” part of the statement read.

“Mr. Mokhothu has previously served as the coach in the premier league with more league honors than any other coach. He brings a wealth of experience to the club” the statement continued.

Mokhothu had previously been with “Tse Nala” as the assistant coach before eventually transcending to the leading role. He was part of a Lioli-side that ended the 24-year league drought during the 2008/09 season. He was also part of the coaching department when they won the 2014/15 and the 2015/16 seasons respectively before he stepped down as technical director of the club. He then later returned to the club at the beginning of the 2018/19 premier league season.

In an interview with Newsday Sport, Mokhothu confirmed his appointment but pointed out that they are yet to iron-out his engagement’s finer details but maintained he knows what is expected of him.

“I know the club as I have been here before and believe I know what the general expectation of the club is, and that’s to win games. I am looking forward to this assignment,” Makhothu said.

Meanwhile, for his part, Lioli president Lebohang Thotanyana said the club had decided on the appointment of Mokhothu based on his knowledge of the club.

“He is one of the local coaches with lots of experience in the premier league, he is indeed the most successful coach with more league honours to his name and knows the club very well,” Thotanyana said.

Thotanyana mentioned that they are yet to sit with the coach to map out how he will work, but confirmed the release of the assistant coach Vuyisane Mangaliso who was currently the caretaker coach.  “Most coaches like to choose their own technical team and the coach made it clear that he would want to have his own so Mr. Mangaliso would be stepping down and will be going back home to South Africa and we wish him success in his future plans,” he said.
