This week the review takes a listen to a single titled Mountains with Voices by Thabo Mora-Mobu a poet of note. This is a cover piece with a time duration of 4 minutes 27 seconds.

It is built on the beat of the song music in the air by the legendary Letta Mbulu which was released back in 2016 from the album titled The Essential.

Upon the release of the single, the artistic poet mentioned on his Facebook that this is a tribute to all the legends that paved the way.

In the first verse he talks about the impact that Ntate Forere the late (Phaumanyetse) had on the music industry in as far as the Lesotho sound is concerned. He mentions the famous traditionalist musician Letsema Matšela who also set the tone for the genre and sound of Basotho.

He continues to praise the beauty of Lesotho through the eye looking at the mountainous ranges and the rivers that run through them. “Haeso Lesotho lithaba li ea bina, mountains have voices, they speak in shadow… this landscapes echo our praises to Nkhono Mantsopa and it introduces us to the world in our absence”

The song chorus is the beautiful piece by Letta Mbulu from that classic hit, making this song an authentic masterpiece of a sample of its own.

He goes on to the second verse passing a recognition to the artist that is Morena Leraba. He compares echoes to voices that vibrate on the eardrums when Morena Leraba plays Morabaraba with poems. With the same tune, he recognises Pitso Ramakhula who is a talented artist of note who has added influence to the poetry culture.

In the last verse he focuses on talking about our roots which he says are deepened by the ancestral rituals and the ardency of souls blowing into saxophones. On this part he mentions the legendary band of Sankomota and other legends who paved the way, “Bonono ke lentsoe la rona ke ka bona ba tsebang ho re re Bashoeshoe, through it we narrate it, through it we narrate stories of Tlholo and ‘Mutlanyana, we tell stories of Tselane and Limo in honor of Mabina, Mpharanyane, ‘Me’ Puseletso Seema…

Well-written and put together, Mountains with voices is a one-of-a-kind piece of artistry that will cement itself as a classic hit.

It has a nostalgic feeling but still has a very relevant feel to it. The young and the old, the streetwise and the academics all can enjoy the track.

I have no doubt in me that should the Legend that is Mom Mbulu hear the song she will definitely approve and give it a huge thumbs up because the poet did justice to it.

Mountains with Voices rates at 8.5 out of 10
