From humble beginnings as a radio fanatic to actually tasting the life of a radio personality, to now ascending to the management of one of the country’s fastest growing commercial radio stations, Tlhokaboyo Mohasi is indeed living her dream.
Commonly known by her stage name Tlhoks, the native of Roma Ha Mafefoane has 11 years of radio experience to her name and has done almost all sorts of shows and programs before her current big break as Programms Manager at Bokamoso FM 974.
She says her first experience with radio was back in her primary schooling days at the National University of Lesotho International School as a young curios listener who wondered how one actually ended up having their voice come out of radio speakers. The spark continued to grow throughout her growing up and gradually developed from curiosity to interest.
“I was in high school when my curiosity on how radio works led me to be more interested in the ins-and-outs of radio,” she said further explaining that “…this is when I approached some of the well-known presenters of that time.
“People like Motlatsi “The Veteran” Majara of People’s Choice (PC) FM as well as Queen of Denver (Refiloe Mohlotsane) who was the it person on radio allowed me to shadow them on their radio shows, they were kind enough to show me the ropes,” she recalls proudly.
She would soon finish her high school education and moved on to acquire a Certificate in Information Technology (IT) at the Quadrant Computer College and a Diploma in Information and Communications from City College in South Africa.
Her first actual radio break came in 2010 when she landed a role at then Thakhube FM, before moving on to PC FM in 2011 where she would spend the next three years before taking a break from her love to pursue an education in South Africa.
While studying marketing in Johannesburg she had an opportunity to work at Alex FM where she took a year between 2017 and 2018. In 2019 she came back home and landed a job at the first online radio ‘Sky Alpha HD’ where she took a year leaving the station in 2020.
“When I left Sky Alfa HD, I felt like I had a lot to offer the industry and I was not getting that as much as it was a good radio station,” she said.
The all-rounded radio presenter told Newsday Arts that she had always known that there is more she can offer as far as radio is concerned hence she would constantly come back to it time and again.
“For some reason in my pursuit of education and sometimes being off radio, I would always feel a void in my heart because I have always known that radio is what I have been called for hence I would always come back,” she explained.
“The radio bug will not leave you especially if it is your calling. So while I took a break from radio after leaving Sky Alpha when that bug hit, I decided to approach Bokamoso 974 and I was given a chance at doing almost every show I could do while I was doing sports on the afternoon drive,” Mohasi said.
After going through training from March to August, she was unveiled new programs manager on the first day of September, putting her in charge of all the radio shows.
She said as a person she believes in being better than yesterday as inspired by “my motto … dream it, believe it, live it. And this is how I got to where I am now, by making sure that my dreams become a reality by believing that it is possible”.
