RE: #Bachashutdown Appeal for Intervention

With reference to the subject mentioned above, we the youth of this country under the umbrella of #Bachashutdown feel frustrated at the slow pace in which our issues are being addressed or rather not be taken cognizant of since our first petition of November 6, November 2020.

Our petition/ grievances are the following:

1. High Youth Unemployment

2. Implementation of the National Youth Policy

3. Gender-Based Violence

4. Reforming National Manpower Development Secretariat (NMDS)

During the march some of our Comrades were assaulted and 11 arrested by the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) for violating amongst other laws the dracconian Public Health (COVID-19) (Risk Determination and Mitigation Measures) regulations 2021 meant curb the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Meetings and Processions Act.

Subsequently, on November 12, 2020 a delegation dispatched by us held a meeting with Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation (MGYSR), Honourable Likeleli Tampane.

During the said meeting our collective stance was that of creating a conducive environment for dialogue and resolving the stated impediments.

Hence the Honourable Minister instructed the then Principal Secretary, Deputy Principal Secretary and Director Youth to work with us.

Bizarrely, Your Majesty, five months later there’s no progress despite us making regular inquiries.

We went as far as elevating our pleas The Right Honourable Prime Minister, Dr Moeketsi Majoro.

Dr Majoro dispatched his Economic Advisor, Dr Maluke Letete to work with us to resolve issues around unemployment. Yet discouragingly, nothing has materialized as we write.

In the midst of the aforementioned concerns, 11 (Eleven) of our Comrades have been charged under archaic pieces of legislation for demanding what is legitimate ours.

In further compounding our misery as the youth the Agenda 2063 and National Youth Policy 2017-2030 have classified us as a “security threat”. Ours is to go against the said statement and consequently resolve to be assets and collaborators in addressing issues which affect us.

Our attempts are as follows:

  • On April 12, 2021 we wrote the Right Honourable Prime Minister, Dr Moeketsi Majoro
  • On April 29, 2021 we wrote to Minister of Gender and Youth, Sports and Recreation (MGYSR), Honourable Likeleli Tampane

We are yet to receive answers from the aforesaid offices.

APPEAL

Your Majesty we appeal for your intervention since we have been failed by policymakers. Our understanding is that they listen to you particularly since the Prime Minister after Cabinet meetings reports to you.

As young people we would like to inherit a prosperous and peaceful Lesotho in which there’s equal opportunity.

Kind Regards
